The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), along with the Department of Transportation (DOT), requires that persons subject to the commercial driver’s license (CDL) requirements and their employers follow alcohol and drug testing rules. These rules include procedures for testing, frequency of tests, and substances tested for.

What Substances Does DOT Test For?​

DOT testing is conducted for both alcohol and drugs. The drugs that are tested are the following:

  • Marijuana/THC

  • Cocaine

  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

When are DOT Tests Conducted?

​There are a number of situations when DOT employees may be subject to drug testing.

The most common situations include: 

​

  • Pre-employment Screening 

  • Reasonable Cause

  • Random Tests

​

All DOT/FMCSA Drug tests are screened at a SAMHSA approved laboratory.

​

  • Amphetamines (including methamphetamine)

  • Opiates (including heroin, codeine, and morphine)

  • Post-Accident

  • Return-to-Duty Testing

  • Follow-Up Tests
